I am on vacation for the next few weeks. Our staff knows how to reach me in an emergency, but in my absence, Jen Peterson will be filling the pulpit and helping Cynthia with pastoral care needs.
It is a very special calling a community has to support persons exploring all gifts for ministry and uniquely gifts of the proclamation of Gods' good word. I ask your tender and encouraging support of Jen in my absence and as always cherish your prayers.

A Good Word for Today: Fall in love.
"There is nothing more important than finding God. That is to say, fall in love with God definitively and absolutely. Whoever falls in love with God will find that The Holy One captures the imagination and leaves a footprint in everything you do. It will decide what gets you out of bed in the morning, what you do in teh afternoon, where you go on teh weekend, what you read, who you meet, what breaks your heart. It will be what fills you with happiness and gratitude. Fall in love. Stay in love, and everything will be different." ~Pedro Arrupe SJ, (translated from Spanish) |

Report from Berlin Germany GLOVO Diversity in Worship and Understanding Written July 24, 2010 by Amy Pazan
Yesterday started out with worship led by the Samara Praise Band. They tried to sing some of the songs in Russian, but it was entertaining. Communion was held in German by Bishop Wenner. Even though it was in German, we understood what was happening as it was presented in our native languages through our translators.
Each of the five languages (German, Russian, Portuguese, English, and French) has one sort of worship service where it is mostly in their language (so far, we have experienced three). I have noticed that this is a good way to deepen our understanding of other languages and be able to hear so many who are one with Christ. However sometimes certain words or phrases are lost in translation, such as the one word used yesterday...one of the translators said "victims" of Jesus Christ when he actually meant to say "sacrifice" of Jesus Christ. It was a funny and awkward moment.
Patrick Scriven's roommate, Rev. Pavel Serdyukov, was the pastor who presented the sermon in Russian. His closing story was about being in unity with the Holy Spirit. He had taken the glass and had broken it up before hand. By then taking water, which was representing the Holy Spirit, he took a piece of the broken glass and said "There is a Holy Spirit and unity with others but it can't hold very much." Then he took and unbroken cup and poured water in it, stating we are the church by unity, we are one being. When we are one, we can make a difference, but when we are apart and arguing too much, we are the pieces of the cup.
I believe we are called to work together with our sisters and brothers in different countries. For without them, we would be no church. Each of us takes part of being a United Methodist Church. Yesterday I learned that a few parts of Africa didn't know that there was a 2008 version of the Book of Discipline. They said their youth and young adults would like to see one and even use one but can't find one available in their native tongue. Without our help, the youth and young people of today will not be able to fully voice their opinion to make sure their church becomes what they want to see happen, not what their parents and grandparents had seen it. It's our church and together we will make a stand to how we want the church to be. Love in Christ, Amy Pazan P.S. Read more reports from all the delegates at http://glovo.pnwmyp.org/ |

You are Invited... Pastor Rody will be serving as an escort to families adopting children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo later this summer/early this fall. He will be taking two duffel bags of infant formula and buying food and formula for the orphans when he arrives. Bureaucratic challenges have now moved Pastor Rody's first Congo trip to late August. The infant formula fund continues to grow. Know that Rody will be taking all the formula he can carry and then personally purchasing the rest and seeing that it goes directly to the orphanages when he arrives. If you would like to share in this part of mission, make your checks out to AUMC and mark your gifts "Pastor's Congo trip." |
