ACTIVITIES There’s so much to do! We have several social groups, so get out your calendars to make some time to give a little and receive a lot. You'll be glad you did... 1. Young At Heart Young At Heart (YAHs) is a social opportunity for all retirees and “retirement wannabes,” regardless of age. We usually have about fifty in attendance.
We meet every other month, September through June, on the first Tuesday of that month at 6:00 pm. The evening includes a potluck dinner and fun activity. A committee volunteers to arrange a program, provide dessert, and perform any kitchen duties. A $2 donation is suggested for each person. After expenses are paid, we donate the funds to different areas in need. This might be a cause within our own church like the Stained Glass Windows Fund; a mission to another church such as White Swan (the United Methodist Church in the Yakima Indian Nation); or an international mission to Africa.
Bring your potluck dish, your place settings, and plan on a fun evening. We hope to see you at a YAHs event soon. If you’re interested, or have questions, click here to send us a message.
2. Lil’ Jon Breakfast Group All good Methodist men come forth for breakfast plus! You are invited to attend each Tuesday morning at 7:00 a.m. for an hour or so at the Lil’ Jon Restaurant in Sunset Village in Eastgate, 3080 148th Ave SE, next to Chapman’s Subaru. A few more good men are needed. Only the best are we! The competition is great! Can you meet our requirements? You must be tough-skinned, sharp-witted, and any age! We inspire each other to keep a stiff upper lip and a smile—always. There is no special leader in this group, we all partake equally. Come on down to see “men of faith.” No advance notice necessary. The food is good and the waitresses are wonderful to us.
3, United Methodist Women (UMC) Circles Two circles meet monthly. All women interested in Christian fellowship and service are invited to join us. Our purpose is a mixture of social, inspirational, educational, service, outreach, and fellowship. The women sponsor special events for all women of the church during the year.
The Deborah Circle meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the home of a member. The Mary Martha UMW Circle meets on the third Thursday of the month at 9:30 am at the church.
4. Quilters Several of our women are involved in a quilting group. The quilts, and other handcrafted items they make, such at table runners, potholders, placemats and napkins are offered to the congregation a couple of times a year. The funds raised are used to support many local and overseas mission projects. This group is open to all women who are interested in making quilts, whether you’re experienced or just beginning. They have a lot of fun on Fridays, so come and join them.
5. Prayer Chain Aldersgate has three prayer chains. We believe that a prayer is an appropriate and powerful act of concern. Prayer requests can come from our Sunday services, or from a phone call or email to the church.
The purpose of the prayer chain is to lift to God the prayers and concerns of the congregation. Members of the prayer chain pledge their dedication and confidentiality.
6. Annual All-Church Retreat Each year, we hold an All-Church Retreat in September. For the last couple of years, Aldersgate has enjoyed the weekend at Lazy F Camp near Ellensburg. There’s always plenty of good food, fellowship, and fun. You can hike, play games, do crafts, or just relax and socialize. Kids from age 2 to 92 are encouraged to come to this uplifting weekend.
7. Camps and Rtreats around the Conference Our camping and retreat ministries continue to be one of the greatest ways youth and adults connect with our Creator and God’s creation. We have four fantastic camps available throughout the Annual Conference. Starting in the eastern side of the conference we have Twinlow Camp and Retreat Center, located on Lower Twin Lake north of Coeur d’Alene, ID; then Lazy F Camp and Retreat Center, located in the Manastash Canyon outside of Ellensburg; Indianola Camp and Retreat Center, located on the Kitsap Peninsula across from Edmonds; and Ocean Park Camp and Retreat Center, located outside of Ocean Park, WA.
There are year round activities at all the locations. To discover what is available please go to http://www.pnwumc.org/html/camping.html Summer camp brochures are available at the church office. These camps fill up quickly so sign up soon.
8. Outreach/Missions The Outreach/Missions Committee coordinates activities that reach into the community, across the nation and the world. The committee directs money from mission pledges and cell tower income to a variety of projects and service agencies. Ongoing programs include: support for children in the Congo (Hope for the Children of Africa), a mission and school for indigenous students in the Philippines, United Methodist Committee on Relief's (UMCOR) crises reaction teams worldwide, Operation Nightwatch’s street mission in Seattle, Crossroads Community Center dinners, and Hopelink, the Eastside’s multi-service organization and food bank. (This month, HopeLink needs to start building its store of kid-friendly juices because when school ends, so do the programs that provide hot breakfasts and lunches for many children.) Information about these and other outreach projects is posted on the kiosk in the narthex.
Easy ways to help (Note: these are not full-time jobs!) - Serve cookies and coffee - Volunteer to help usher - Be a greeter - Make a salad for the Crossroad Meal mission - Children’s Missions - The children in our Sunday School do their part in reaching out to those less fortunate. They have been involved in projects for food banks, missions for other churches, and the Crossroads Dinners. 9. Crossroads Dinner Aldersgate provides dinner to low-income members of our Eastside community on the 4th Tuesday of each month. The meals are served at the Salvation Army Building on 164th in the Crossroads area. The typical turnout ranges from 45 to over 60 people. The menu is the same each month. We provide fried chicken, green salad, dinner rolls, fruit or jello salad, cookies and beverages. We purchase the chicken and dinner rolls using funds reserved by the church for Crossroads. Members of the church provide the rest and also help serve.
You can contribute to this program in one of three ways: donate money (not much fun), food (some fun), or come help serve (the most fun). Serving and cleanup is no more than a 1-hour commitment, excluding drive time. Pledges to serve or contribute food are taken immediately after church services the Sunday before our Tuesday meal date. Serving the needy in our community couldn’t be much easier.
10, Hammond House We provide breakfast twice a month for the women sheltered at Hammond House. Women and youth of the church prepare and serve the breakfast on second and fourth Sunday mornings. 11. Church of Mary Magdalene Aldersgate provides support for homeless women continously throughout the year as part of this program. Want to be part of a rewarding mission and share what you have to offer with people? Please join us and one of the above activities. For more information, please contact us.
